Hockey season is upon us
Once you start seeing the Halloween costumes and candy showing up at the stores, that can only mean one thing. It’s almost Halloween! Oh wait, that wasn’t my point. Hockey, yes, Hockey season. That’s where I was going with this. WOO HOO! It’s hockey season!
Normally I sign up for a fantasy hockey heam with the guys from the office and that helps to keep me focused on how teams are doing all season long. This year, somehow I’ve ended up in 3 fantasy hockey leagues. Apparently I’ll need to follow the games even closer this year. I’ll probably end the season knowing what each player eats before each game.
With hockey season opening today, I was thinking what do I have to look forward to as a Los Angeles Kings fan. Well, most likely: mediocrity. I’m not expecting a lot out of the Kings this year. They still don’t have a true #1 goalie, and the bulk of their guys are really young. This isn’t a horrible thing. It just doesn’t bode well for this season. I firmly believe that the Kings are a solid goalie and 2 seasons away from being a solid team in the west. However, until that time I have 2 wishes for the Kings;
- Make the playoffs
Even if they don’t go deep in the playoffs, making the playoffs would be a great step in the right directions. However, if that can’t happen, see #2. - Finish dead last
If you aren’t going to make the playoffs, shoot for the bottom. That way you get the best chance at getting the #1 pick in next season’s draft.
There is one other hope I have for the Kings this year. In November when you reveal your new “3rd jersey”, please make it not SUCK! I think it’s time I buy a new Kings jersey, and I’d like to pick up one of the 3rd jerseys assuming they are nothing like that monstrosity of a 3rd jersey you came out with a few years back. Seriously, that thing was horrible.
I was really pleased to hear that the Kings chose Dustin Brown as the team captain. He’s a young guy but obviously a player that the Kings are looking at to take them to the next level over the next few years. He’s a stud of a player and is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Lace up the skates, put on the foil, drop the puck. It’s hockey season. Go, Kings, Go!

More domains looking for projects
As I mentioned in a recent post, I’m back to having nearly 40 domain names. Writing that post hasn’t slowed me down any. I won another auction on ebay today for another domain name. This time it was ssjoy.com. And before you ask, no, I don’t have any idea what I’m going to do with it at this time. But, it got me to thinking, what other domain names do I own that I keep paying for but have no real plan for. Don’t get me wrong, many of these domains have content on them. That doesn’t mean I have any idea where they are going to go and how they can become a profit center.
Here’s the list for your enjoyment. If you have any thoughts on what to do with any of these, please feel free to let me know.

For most of these the best idea would probably be to just let them expire, cut my losses and move on. But when I get that notice from godaddy, I just can’t seem to say no to renewing them.
I have a real problem. I need to go to Domain Buyers Anonymous.

At least I’m not going to jail
A few months back I received a jury duty summons in the mail. This was a few days after laughing at my wife because she got one. Turns out that Karma is even tied to the jury duty system. Who knew. When I got my notice I made a mental note of when my date to appear was supposed to be and promptly lost the summons that included my jury ID number.
A few weeks go by and my jury duty date is supposed to be the next day. I realize that I now have an issue. I don’t have the summons with my jury ID number on it. I look up the number for jury duty services online and call in to the automated system. It takes me 2 tries and 35 minutes, but when I’m done I’m under the impression that I have been excused from service the following day and that I’m “done” with jury duty. Woo Hoo! I go on blissfully with my life.
Not so fast.
2 weeks ago I received a new post card from the jury duty folks. In big block letters across the top it says, “FAILURE TO RESPOND TO JURY SUMMONS“. It then goes on to say that I didn’t respond to my first selection date and that a second failure to report would result in the court initiating a “contempt of court” proceedings against me. They follow that up with this description:
“Contempt of Court charge is punishable by fine up to $500.00, 25 days in jail, or community service.”
$500, I could live with that. I wouldn’t like it, but it wouldn’t kill me. Community service, again, wouldn’t kill me. 25 days in jail, something tells me that’s not going to be like being on vacation.
So I drop what I’m doing an call the number listed on the card. It’s at this time that I realize that I STILL don’t have my jury ID number. This means I can’t use any of the automated phone systems. I need to physically talk to a human. I go through the automated system and push # at the right time to get me in the queue to talk to human. But, a recorded voice comes on the line and says, “Due to the high volume of calls, the wait time to speak to a representative would exceed 30 minutes. Please try again later” and then I hear a click as it hangs up on me. I try to call 3 times the following day with the same results. I then try at least 2 times each day for the next 6 days all ending in the same fashion. I’m starting to freak out.
Yesterday was my lucky day. I finally made it through the automated phone maze (which I was able to do without waiting for prompts from the automated voice after so many previous attempts.) When I pushed Zero to talk to a rep, rather than hearing the familiar message and subsequent “click”, a dew recording said, “There are currently 22 callers ahead of you on hold.” SWEET! I put the phone on speaker and went about my work. Every few minutes it would give me an update as to the amount of people still in front of me. When it finally said I was next I picked up the phone to talk to my human.
I explained my situation and the very nice and helpful lady said, “No problem, we’ll reschedule you.” She’s sending me out a new jury duty summons which will have my jury ID number on it. I will guard this with my life. If I hadn’t lost that number, I would have been able to clear this up with one phone call. Instead I spent an extra week basically in panic mode trying to figure out how I was going to enjoy 25 days in jail.
As it turns out, this was really all my fault to begin with. The lady says that on the original summons it says to call in as SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT. Without calling to confirm you received it, calling the night before is totally useless. I apparently missed that part.

Double-Check Your Work!
Over the past few weeks I have been working on organizing the WordCamp:Las Vegas conference in January. I but together a website, I added some content and I even signed up for eventbrite.com to let them handle the registrations. I added a button to the site to send the visitors over to eventbrite.com to complete their registration and I tested the link to make sure everything was working properly. Once satisfied, I checked that off my list of things to do and I moved on.
This past weekend there was a LOT of buzz surrounding WordPress and more specifically, WordCamp. There were events held in 3 different cities around the country. There’s another one taking place this coming weekend. WordPress and WordCamp are the hot ticket right now. And yet, it’s been almost 2 full weeks and not a single person has completed the registration form. I realize that the event is still over 3 months away, but come on. Not 1 person signed up?
I received an email this morning from a guy who took the time to write. It said the following:
“Trying to register for WordCamp LV, but the registration form has no submit button. I’ll try again in a day or two and hope it works.”
ACK!! I immediately followed up with an email to the help desk at eventbrite.com asking what the deal is. Unfortunately, it’s now been a full day without a response. That saddens me a little bit. I’ll be following up in the morning with another email and perhaps a phone call.
In this case it wasn’t my work that needed double-checking. But had I taken the extra step to test out the form before considering it done, I would have saved myself some grief.
Live and learn.

I missed it all
As I wrote about yesterday, my leg is in some pain. What I didn’t realize that the combination of seeing the doctor yesterday and having him work on my leg followed up by 5 hours of standing at a Foo Fighters concert was going to render me basically crippled.
I woke up this morning around 5:30 to the most severe pain I’ve felt in years. My leg was absolutely screaming at me. I woke up the wife and had her get me an ice pack. I iced the leg for a while but didn’t really feel any relief.
I spent about 2 hours sitting at my desk trying to get some work done. By the end, the pain was unbearable. We grabbed some lunch and then I crashed out on the couch for a 2 hour nap. I then went upstairs and moved in to bed where I would spend the remainder of the day and evening.
This weekend there were 3 WordCamp events that I would have loved to have gone to. Not all of them, but any one of them. 2 of them were relatively close being in Utah and Oregon. But, when I was trying to schedule it all, a buddy’s wedding today and Foo Fighters tickets last night meant that I wasn’t going to be leaving town. Then, instead of going to the wedding, I spend the evening in bed.
This sucks.
I plan on another visit to the doctor on Monday. I need to start getting well pretty darn quick. There is NO WAY I can tackle Disneyland next week in my condition.
Did I mention that this sucks?
My leg is currently feeling as bad as it did at 5:30 this morning. I’ve iced it several times, took some Advil and have tried to stay off it as much as possible. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
