When faced with negativity or provocation, I choose to ignore it, and this decision isn’t without purpose. According to reinforcement theory, responding to negative behavior whether with anger or defense actually strengthens that behavior. When a toxic person gets an emotional reaction from me, they may feel “rewarded” because their provocation succeeded. By choosing not to engage, I break this cycle of reinforcement. Over time, they realize that their attempts to provoke me are ineffective, which leads them to eventually stop.

By understanding these psychological principles, I am more convinced than ever that ignoring toxic individuals is the wisest approach. Not only does it protect my mental health, but it also prevents others from having control over my emotional state.
