John Hawk Insunrated – Laura Reynell’s journey highlights the transformative power of sports in the recovery and rehabilitation of military veterans. Through her involvement in the Invictus and Warrior Games, she has found healing, camaraderie, and unexpected love. Laura’s story shows how these events bring participants closer, creating lasting friendships and relationships that change lives forever.
Laura joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 2016 as an Able Seaman Boatswain’s Mate. During a deployment in 2017, she was involved in a serious accident with a machine gun, resulting in multiple surgeries. Laura has undergone around 20 surgeries, including foot reconstruction, ligament transplants, and joint replacements. Despite the challenges, Laura’s journey of recovery led her to discover adaptive sports, which would play a pivotal role in her healing process.

In 2023, Laura participated in the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany. It was at this event that she met Erin Brigden, a fellow competitor, and they instantly formed a strong bond. “From the moment we met, it was just an instant click,” Laura recalls. Despite being strangers at first, they felt as though they had known each other for years. Their friendship has only grown over time, with the two remaining in constant contact.
Erin and Laura’s connection continued to thrive as they both competed in the Warrior Games in Florida. Even though they live far apart, the two are dedicated to staying in touch. Their families live nearby, and they frequently meet up whenever they can. “Pretty much every day we talk, and if we haven’t heard from each other, we call,” Laura says.
Now, at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler, the two friends are again supporting each other from the stands. Erin cheers on Laura’s former teammate, while Laura supports Erin’s friend, Nigel Coutts. Their bond is a testament to the power of sports to build lasting connections among those who have experienced similar challenges.

In Florida, Laura also met Moses Debraska, a competitor from Team US, and their connection blossomed quickly. Their shared experiences of overcoming injuries from military service allowed them to relate on a deeper level. “I don’t feel judged, I feel open,” Laura says, describing their unique connection. Despite living on different continents, with Moses based in the US and Laura in Australia, the couple has maintained a strong and supportive relationship.
Moses speaks highly of Laura, saying, “She’s the first woman I ever brought to meet my family, and it meant so much to me and my family.” Their bond has only strengthened, and there are plans for Laura to join Moses in Colorado for a few months.
Laura’s journey proves that sport has the power to heal, connect, and change lives. Through her experiences at the Invictus and Warrior Games, she has formed meaningful relationships that continue to enrich her life. These events have shown her that even in the face of adversity, love, friendship, and healing can flourish.
